Prepping for your headshot session

Skin and hair tips for great headshots

My friend, Connie Tsang, makeup and hairstylist extraordinaire whose clients include Dr. Jill Biden, Jake Tapper, CNN, PBS and ESPN, just to name a few.

Here are a some of her recommendations on prepping your skin and hair for you headshot session, for both women and men.

Hair Prep: Wash your hair the night before with shampoo and conditioner (If your hair is ultra-fine and oil prone, wash in the morning of your headshot session. Apply conditioner from mid-shaft of the hair to the ends (this helps with tangles). If possible, apply a mousse or smoothing cream in the hair when blowing drying.

Skin Prep: Please exfoliate face with a gentle facial scrub once every day until your session to smooth the “canvas” for makeup application. Focus on areas with noticeable pores, oil, around the nose, mouth and on the lips. After cleaning your face, apply toner and/or moisturizer, before applying makeup for your session. If you’ve scheduled The Power Session, please arrive without makeup.

So now your skin and hair look amazing! What’s next? Check out makeup guru Lisa Eldridge’s very basic tutorial My 5 Minute Makeup. And yes, it’s just five minutes. It’s a great start to applying a little makeup to look great for your photo session and for everyday. And do check my "What to Wear" page for additional info and tips.

Realtor Headshots: 5 Tips to Getting Good Ones

Let’s try to imagine a real estate world without the realtor headshot. Beside each realtor’s name and contact info would be one of those gray, generic avatars indicating only whether the realtor was a women or man. Of course, the all important marketing tool called “word of mouth,” would account for a good deal of new business, but without a headshot, how would a potential buyer or seller chose?

There are few professions where instilling a sense of trust and knowledge is vital to success. Doctors, lawyers and real estate agents have to look like the experts that they are.  A professional, real estate agent headshot with good lighting and the right pose can go a long way to getting you business. Here are a few tips according to Zillow on how a professional real estate photograph can make you more memorable.

1) Make sure your photograph is current. There’s nothing more shocking than meeting someone who looks years older than their photo. Remember, you want to instill trust!

2) Do you have a specialty? Farm properties, lake properties or historic homes? Shoot your headshot on location.  If not, use a solid color background.

3) Get electronic versions in .jpg, .gif or .png format.  That way you can upload them to your blog, your LinkedIn page or anywhere on the web. Also ask for hi-resolution versions so you’ll have quality images for printing brochures and other marketing materials.

4) Don’t use props like “For Sale” signs or cell phones. And don’t include anyone else in your photograph unless they’re your realtor partner. No family members, friends, or pets!

5) Take it easy on the retouching! Blemishes are ok to remove, but totally eliminating any age lines or whittling away the waistline can appear to be dishonest.

Happy Selling!

How a Professional Business Portrait Can Help Your Career

Let's face it, at some point in your career, you're going to need a professional business headshot.  Whether you work in hi-tech, real estate, law, science, finance or the arts, it's impossible to succeed without “marketing” yourself. If you want to develop new contacts and strengthen established relationships, your audience wants to see what you look like. Are you confident, trustworthy, approachable? But you say you already have a business headshot on your website, your Facebook page, your LinkedIn page, your Twitter account and your blog. Are you using the snapshot your office mate took with her cell phone?  Hmmm. Let's try to overlook the poor lighting and distracting background. The question is, “does it convey your confidence, trustworthiness and approachability"?  Probably not. But that's what a good business portrait should do!
